The sharing economy is an expanding business model built on the idea of collaborative consumption, i.e., people relying on each other in obtaining access to merchandise. The core of the model is the consumer renting underused assets from other consumers, rather than purchasing new ones. First identified in the mid-2000s, it was galvanized by the radical expansion of social media, the development of the mobile Internet, and a growing sense of urgency regarding natural resource depletion.
